Appalachia's sleeping giant: the Trenton/Black River Play

Writer's picture: Randall HuntRandall Hunt

Here's some oil/gas trivia for you: which Appalachian oil/gas play did the following?

  • Launched Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company (today's ExxonMobil) ?

  • Gave us the world's FIRST giant oil field?

  • Contains some of the most prolific oil/gas wells in the world?

  • Can access 5-25 BCF in reserves via $1.5MM vertical wells?

You would be forgiven if you were not aware that the answer is the Trenton/Black River (TBR) hydrothermal dolomite play. The TBR is an enigma, having basically kicked off worldwide exploration for giant oil fields, yet subsequently remaining an immature, sporadically explored trend, largely due to a lack of quality seismic data, which the play is heavily reliant on. Due to the shale revolution, that has now changed. New, "shale 3D" seismic data is revealing giant new undrilled prospects, which Hunt Geophysical is seeking drilling partners on. The TBR is a play unlike any other, with its ability to access spectacular resource sizes, for the cost of an 8000' vertical well. See more details on the exclusive prospects we have available, here
